living in: clueless

by amym

No movie holds more sway in the minds of ladies who came of age in the 1990s than Clueless. We pined for Cher’s wardrobe of totally important designer dresses, seemingly large vocabulary, glossy locks, hot step brother, hosiery, endless supply of lemon Snapples and, most of all, her computer-generated outfit match-maker. Now a good 16 years later (whaat?), most of those things have lost their luster, but the very idea of Cher still looms larger than life. — Amy M.

The second set of stills and another roundup continue after the jump!

My inability to find a beautiful rotating closet for this roundup will go on my permanent record of internet failures. Will you forgive me, and can we let the healing begin? I looked for hours, and all I could find was this as seen on TV disaster. Not Cher-approved. Instead, let’s focus on replicating Cher’s closet fanciness — be it a wacky, organized shoe display, an oversized gilt mirror, an argyle skirt ripped from your most responsible-looking ensemble or a bag that you didn’t, ahem, skin a collie for. To ignore Cher’s influence on our whole adolescence? As if!

Suggested For You

  • I love the “Living Ins” and Clueless was such a huge movie for me when I was 15. Totally.

  • I just love that you have the pre-made cookie dough in there — “when a boy comes over, you should always have something baking.”

  • Good grief. I was in high school w this flick. I rocked argyle and the chunky maryjanes

  • Aaaah this movie never gets old! I quote it to this day (as does my dad – “I’ve got a .45 and a shovel. I doubt anybody would miss you.”)

Have been super excited about the return of wrap skirts, plaid, and chunky loafers. This skirt, in particular, would fit in nicely in the roundup: http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/172571

Ooh, or these shoes, the better to accentuate my stems: http://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/SHOESBOOTS/pumpsandheels/PRDOVR~50383/50383.jsp

  • My sister and I were just discussing how hard we tried to emulate the knee/thigh highs with mary janes look. We just never quite made it…

  • Awww, I’ve never stopped “rolling with the homies” who are totally existential to my being! Outie all you Betties! :o)

  • Oh my goodness! I was 15 when this movie came out. I totally sported some of that stuff… and I would do it all over again.

  • Heck Yes! I love this movie. Such a girly classic. I was always so jealous of her beautiful hair! Gotta have that fluffy pink pen, too–takes me back to junior high school!

  • Would you look at that body language? Legs crossed towards each other. That is an *unequivocal* sex invite.

  • I absolutely love this movie! and it’s great how you picked all the significant pieces and was able to find them! great, nostalgic, post!

  • Duuuuude, YES!! I was in love with Paul Rudd even back then. And maybe Alicia a little bit, too.

  • I was just having the “what I would do with gobs of money” conversation and I said I would build a closet like Cher’s from this movie :D Complete with Polaroid camera to take pictures of my outfits, cuz, you know that’s the only way to tell if they look good.

  • Love the fourth pic from the movie, you can see Amber in the background rocking a LOT of pattern. That girl. Such a Monet.

  • “Aww, honey – ya baked!” I will totally admit to using fuzzy pens and wearing thigh high’s with platforms at one stage of my life. I may have also had a tshirt that said WHATEVER. So bad. Love this living in!

  • “You’re a virgin who can’t drive” remains one of my favourite insults. Way harsh!

  • – “Do you like Billie Holiday?”
    – “Oh, I love him!”

    Thanks for another great post!

  • Oh my goodness, has it really been 16 years??? I loved Clueless when it came out and now that I’ve seen your awesome post I must go watch it again.

  • First day of seventh grade, I wore a baby tee, a pleated skirt and knee-high socks. In my top 10 of movies FOREVER. I actually had a huge fight with a coworker who said she’d never seen it because it looked “dumb.” As if!

  • Love this! Thanks for the HS/College flashback! I saw that shoe wheel recently and thought of her fabulous closet as well!

  • I was watching this on TV the other day, and telling my BF how much I always wanted the pink plaid pants/sweater ensemble that she wore to the skateboarding competition. I honestly think I would still wear it.
I have the movie soundtrack, and it has some of my favorite running songs.

  • I think I was the only person male or female who didn’t use a feather pen in my 1996 Fashion Merchandising class. I have a feather allergy :)

  • Oh, how I remember wanting to be Cher and having that computer choose outfits for me every day. I also remember having the biggest crush on Paul Rudd. He was, like, such a Baldwin! Love this post =)

  • Hi Grace! I love this post! Clueless recently played at McCarren Park- and I missed it! Always next year though :)
I love your shoes too in your DesignSponge book video! (the clogs)- what brand are they? I have been looking all over for them!

  • “that’s Ren and Stimpy, they’re way extential.”
“do you veven know what that means?”
” No but do I sound like I do?”

    Oh dont get me started.

    Mr.Sweet Butters’ favorite line is

“what’s with you kid? You think the death of Sammy Davis left an opening in the Rat Pack?!”

  • LOL I love how the cookie dough is included. I still watch this movie every so often and I still fall in love with it, over and over again. Thank you for this grat piece of nostalgia !

  • One of these days I’d love to see a Living In of Daria. If only because it would be the perfect complement to Clueless.

  • Just the other day I watched Clueless and thought of you, and how great a “Living In” for it would be. The Fug Girls will love this!

  • I came of age in the 90s too and this movie was huuuuuge for me (I was in 7th grade). It still never fails to make me smile. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too.

  • Oh the memories! There wasn’t a girl in my school that didn’t have a sparkly marabou pen. Makes me feel very old to see how dated it all looks now!

  • This is so awesome. Just yesterday I was going for a job interview and I said to myself “it’s my most capable looking ensemble”. Love it.

  • Cher: You can’t be the absolute and final word on drivers’ licenses?
DMV Test Man: Girlie, as far as you’re concerned, I am the messiah of the DMV.

    sweet and awesome

  • :) I’m one of the ones who never saw Clueless. I’m not into movies though but I enjoy when Design Sponge does their take here and I read the comments, far more interesting to me.
For the pink pen, bought one last year for a couple of $ as a breast cancer fund raiser at Walgreens. Some of these looks are not so dated as I’m seeing a lot of these items all over the stores now.
Congratulations on your book publishing too. btw, I tried getting your newspaper, looks as if everyone got there before me.

  • I snorted in my cubicle when I saw the cookie dough (HA!). Love this post – that was one of my favorite movies in the 90s and I STILL dream of that closet and something that will match my outfits for me….and Paul Rudd. Still dream of him for sure.

  • Best “living in” ever!!! I so wanted to be Cher when I saw this for the first time in the theater when I was 13, and I STILL DO want to be her. All of my back to school clothes that year were inspired by her, including about 8 pairs of knee-socks.
Also this is the movie that ignited my love for Paul Rudd *swoon*

  • “And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty. Thank you very much. “

  • Oh how I loved that movie in high school … still do, actually. Love it!

  • Perfect! Adore Cher and co. And so quotable! Still use “toe-up”, “sporadic” and “monet” frequently… :)

  • This movie along with 10 THings was the pinnacle when I was a teenager. There was nothing better than this movie at the time! I loved the stupidity and the romance, ohh to have high socks. It’s kinda sad now tho cause both those movies have someone who died recently, so it’s hard to watch them now.

  • this is the most awesome Living In – LOVE IT!

Cher’s style and of course Josh made this movie epic! It changed the way I looked at quiet and mysterious guys forever *sigh*

  • Love this movie, especially the dressing scene in the beginnig. Always dreamt about the shoeweel btw. Congrats with the book!

  • Love!! I always dreamed about having Cher’s closet and went so far as to take pictures of almost every clothing/shoe item I owned at age 12 and put them in a rollodesk. Your closet search sent me on my own search, and I did find this app for the iPhone called Pocket Closet – you can load pics of your clothes, shoes, accessories and virtually try them on – needless to say I’ll be getting this today!

  • One of my favorite movies! I could probably act this out. My best friend and I STILL quote it. Love this post!!

  • To this day it will be my favourite movie! maybe I’ll just veg out and watch it tonight.

  • Love love this! One of my faves, but I no longer have it because it was on VHS and I got rid of all those. I need to get it on DVD! So many good quotes!

“So, the flannel shirt deal — is that a nod to the crispy Seattle weather, or are you trying to stay warm in front of the refrigerator?”

Dionne: Dude, that was a stop sign.
    Cher: I totally paused!

  • This is one of those movies that, every time it comes on TV, I have to stop and watch it! Alicia Silverstone’s hair… covet! And Paul Rudd is still dreamy! I love when Cher puts Josh’s bohemian date in her place, “I think I know Shakespeare!” “Well, I know Mel Gibson, and he didn’t say that, that Polonius guy did.”

  • Tai: You’re a virgin… who CAN’T drive.
Cher: That was way harsh, Tai.

I LUUUUURVE this movie. And kudos on posting the cookie dough. I still dream of a rotating closet with technological clothes-matching software.

  • Tai: Do you think she’s pretty?
    Cher: No, she’s a full-on Monet.
    Tai: What’s a monet?
Cher: It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.

By far and away my fave quote from this movie. Love it! Can’t believe you found a yellow plaid jacket.
