10 Rooms Where Exposed Brick Rules

by Lauren Chorpening

Perfectly painted drywall or plaster has a clean, easy aesthetic in homes and studios. Its versatility allows color schemes to change effortlessly. The charm and personality in rooms with enclosed walls comes from the pieces that fill the space, rather than the walls themselves. But exposed brick is full of character on its own. Whether it’s a section of wall or a whole room of brick, the historic feel of exposed brick gives a room a commanding statement. Less art and extras are needed in a space beautifully featuring brick. It’s a wow factor that doesn’t need much else. These 10 rooms show off how brick can be incorporated impeccably well in different design styles. –Lauren

A peek of lathe in Tracy and Jamie's living room has a rustic charm that perfectly fits with their Catskills home. It has the same impact as exposed brick and is a beautiful option for adding texture to a room if you own an older home where this original feature exists.

  • While it doesn’t make me like it any less- actually, it made me click over to the linked tour (which I hadn’t seen before)- the second photo is clearly lathe. But, thank you for the error; it led to a great tour!
Also, the soft greyish tones of the brick in the last pic are just unexpectedly lovely!

  • Exposed brick can be an amazing statement in any room. I love the third picture where the brick is only partially exposed. It makes the already interesting piece unique and artful.

  • I was trying to fix the plaster in my bedroom and a big chunk of it crumbled and fell, exposing the lathe. I saw bricks behind the lathe that were part of the chimney, so I took all of the plaster and lathe down and exposed the old brick. It was in good condition and a lovely, soft red color and really made the bedrom look cozy.
